Italy’s Must-visit Destinations in 2018

With so much diversity and iconic attractions, Italy continues to attract thousands of visitors each year. If you’re thinking of an Italy holiday and are looking for some travel inspiration, here are our must-visit destinations in 2018.

Matera

Lonely Planet recently named Matera as one of the best cities to visit in 2018 and the ancient city was also highlighted in a BBC episode of Italy Unpacked. With such accolades, Matera tops our list of must-visit destinations in 2018.

This enchanting city in South Italy’s Basilicata region is a UNESCO-protected site and is home to the fascinating Sassi de Matera – dwellings that are considered to be among the first human settlements in Italy. In the city you can explore these intriguing rock-carved houses, taking a step back in time to the ancient world. There are also several museums that you can enjoy, such as Casa Grotta di Vico Solitario– a Sassi cave that has been recreated with historic furnishings, so you can imagine how people lived so many years ago.

Assisi

If you’ve already discovered the main cities of Italy and are looking to step off the beaten track to discover the heart of central Italy, then you can’t go wrong with an Assisi holiday.

Assisi is the most-visited city in the picturesque Italy region of Umbria, which borders Tuscany. The city’s history is dominated by the story of St Francis, and there are many churches and monasteries to explore dedicated to this beloved saint. We particularly love Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi; however, there is much more than its spiritual ambience to attract you to Assisi as the surrounding landscape is simply sublime. From Assisi you can also easily enjoy a wine-tasting tour or visit other destinations in Umbria, such as Perugia.

Aeolian Islands

Each of Italy’s regions has its own culture and traditions, which is what makes an Italy multi centre holiday such as joy. Lonely Planet recently named the Aeolian Islands in Sicily as a must-travel region in 2018. These idyllic volcanic islands boast stunning landscape and natural treasures, making them a joy for naturalists, as well as those looking for a relaxing coastal holiday in 2018.

The Aeolian Islands consist of Lipari, Vulcano, Salina, Panarea, Stromboli, Alicudi and Filicudi. Two of the islands (Stromboli and Vulcano) are home to active volcanos, which are known to erupt regularly. This is particularly true of Stromboli, which puts on a light show every 30 minutes or so! Meanwhile, Vulcano boasts sulphur mud baths, which are thought to have skin-healing properties.

As the Aeolian Islands are small, we recommend basing yourself in a popular Sicily tourist destination, such as Catania or Cefalu. From there, you can enjoy a day trip to the Aeolian Islands, with a walking tour of Stromboli and free time to relax in Vulcano’s mud baths.

Alberobello

There are few places in the world as magical as Alberobello – a fairy-tale like city in the heart of Apulia – and it sits firmly on our list of must-visit destinations in 2018.

Alberobello is most famous as being home to the charming trulli. These are UNESCO-protected buildings that date back to the 14th century. They are defined by their limestone features and hand-crafted conical roofs, creating a whimsical atmosphere that is simply enchanting. Children will love exploring these quaint buildings and, as a part of your tailor-made Alberobello holiday, we can arrange for you to stay in an authentic trullo for an unforgettable experience.

An Alberobello holiday is the perfect mix of culture, relaxation and vibrant Italian life. We highly recommend this must-visit 2018 destination for a family holiday or couples’ getaway.

Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast is a stunning stretch of coastline in South Italy, not far from Sorrento and Naples. The area was recently highlighted on an episode of Gino’s Italian Coastal Escape and is defined by its picturesque fishing villages. The most famous are Amalfi, Ravello and Positano, the latter being a hot destination for celebrities and famous faces.

On an Amalfi Coast package holiday, you can truly relax before stunning seascapes and immerse yourself in rich Mediterranean gardens. The Amalfi Coast villages are also perfectly placed if you would like to explore Campania. From Amalfi, Ravello and Positano you can easily reach Sorrento and Naples, or enjoy a day trip to the idyllic islands of Capri and Ischia. For those looking to explore the history of the region, we can arrange a day trip to Pompeii as a part of your customised Amalfi Coast holiday. Visiting this lost city feels like you’re stepping back in time, all the way to 79 AD.
