About Abruzzo holidaysOften referred to as Italy’s best kept secret, Abruzzo lies less than 80 kilometres east of Rome and borders the regions of Marche to the north, Lazio to the west and south-west, Molise to the south-east, and the Adriatic Sea to the east. Although geographically more of a central than southern region, ISTAT (The Italian Statistical Authority) considers it part of Southern Italy, a vestige of Abruzzo's historic association with the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The region is situated at the centre of the Italian peninsula facing the Adriatic, which it follows along 150 km of incredible beaches. With an area of 10,794 square kilometres, it is one of the most mountainous regions in Italy and has a population of around 1.3 million inhabitants. L'Aquila, in central Italy, is laid out within medieval walls on a hill in the valley of the Aterno River. The city is surrounded by the Apennines. L'Aquila sits upon a hillside in the middle of a narrow valley. A maze of narrow streets, lined with Baroque and Renaissance buildings and churches, open onto elegant piazzas. The city is home to the University of L'Aquila and has many cultural institutions, including a repertory theatre, a symphony orchestra, a fine-arts academy, a state conservatory and a film institute. The city also has a tradition in winter sports with four ski resorts lying around the city, including Gran Sasso d'Italia to the north east. In the highest part of the town is the massive Spanish fort (Forte Spagnolo), which is home to the National Museum of Abruzzo. Other sights in L'Aquila include the Church of San Bernadino di Siena and the Church of Santa Maria di Callemaggio. The surrounding area boasts Roman ruins (the important Roman city of Amiternum), ancient monasteries and numerous castles. The best known of these is Rocca Calascio, which is the highest castle in Italy and one of the highest in Europe.

Pescara is located on the Adriatic coast at the mouth of the Aterno-Pescara River. The city's main street is Corso Umberto I, which runs from Piazza della Repubblica and reaches the seacoast at Piazza Primo Maggio. The rectangle that it forms with Corso Vittorio Emanuele II and Via Nicola Fabrizi encloses the main shopping district, where several of the best fashion shops are located. Corso Manthone, in the area known as old Pescara, is the centre of the night life in the city. Pescara is also home of the Gabriele d'Annunzio University (named after the famous poet born in the city), a thriving business district and a marina at the mouth of the Aterno-Pescara River. Attractions in the city include the Cathedral of San Cetteus (which contains Guercino's paint of Saint Francis), Madonna dei Sette Dolori Basilica, Palazzo di Citta, Palazzo del Governo and the Museum of the Abruzzo people (which looks into 4000 years of history in Abruzzo).
