About ApuliaApulia (Italian: Puglia), in south eastern Italy, borders the Adriatic Sea in the east, the Ionian Sea to the south east, and the Strait of Òtranto and Gulf of Taranto in the south. Its southern portion known as Salento, a peninsula, forms a high heel on the "boot" of Italy. The region comprises 19,345 square kilometres and its population is about 4 million. It neighbours Greece and Albania, across the Ionian and Adriatic Seas, respectively. The region extends as far north as Monte Gargano, and was the scene of the last stages in the Second Punic War. Apulia is a very dry region. Its few rivers are torrential and are to be found on the Tavoliere delle Puglie, a tableland at the foot of the Gargano promontory that is one of the largest and agriculturally most productive plains in Italy. The regions capital is Bari. Other places include Taranto, Eni, Bridisi, Manfredonia, Foggia, Casarano, Monopoli-Putignano and the caves at Castellana Grotte, which are particularly spectacular.
Alberobello is known as the 'Capital of the Trulli'. The trulli are a fascinating architectural feature of this area of Puglia. A trullo (singular) it is a small fairytale-like 14th century dwelling built from the local limestone, with dry-stone walls and a characteristic conical roof without mortar. Alberobello has been designated a UNESCO world heritage site because of its unique collection of some 1,500 trulli. Some of the trulli are now used for shops, restaurants, and lodgings. But many are still inhabited by locals, who are very friendly to visitors. As well as the two trulli zones, other attractions include the Basilica, Trullo Sovrano, the trullo Church of St Antony and the trulli museum. During the summer months Alberobello plays host to a number of festivals. These include a significant international folk festival, music festivals including classical, jazz and popular music, dance, theatre, street theatre and childrens events. There are also religious festivals with music performances and firework displays. Most of the performances are free and open-air. The town also has a vibrant passeggiata with summer strolls continuing beyond midnight.

Lecce is a historic city in southern Italy. It is the main city of the Salentine Peninsula, a sub-peninsula at the heel of the Italian Peninsula and is over 2,000 years old. Due to the rich Baroque architectural monuments found in the city, Lecce is commonly nicknamed "Florence of the Baroque" or the "Rome of the South". Also much of the traditional affinity lies with Greek culture going back to its foundation; the Messapii who founded the city are said to have been Cretans in Greek records. The main attractions include Piazza S. Oronzo, the Duomo (designed by G.Zimbalo), Porta Napoli, the Obelisk, Paisiello Theatre, the Holy Cross Church, Torre del Parco and the beautiful botanical garden known as Orto Botanico di Lecce operated by the University of Lecce. |
