About Basilicata holidaysBasilicata (formerly Lucania), in the south of Italy, can be thought of as the "instep" of Italy, with Calabria functioning as the "toe" and Apulia the "heel". The region covers 9,992 square kilometres and has a population of about 600,000 inhabitants. The regional capital is Potenza. The region is divided into two provinces: Potenza and Matera. Geological features of the region include the volcanic Monte Vulture and the seismic faults in the Melfi and Potenza areas in the north and around Monte Pollino in the south. The variable climate is influenced by three coastlines (Adriatic, Ionian and Tyrrhenian) and the complexity of the region's physical features. The climate is continental in the mountains and Mediterranean along the coasts. Maratea is a town on the Tyrrhenian coast known as "the Pearl of the Tyrrhenian" because of its beautiful scenery and coastline. Owing to the considerable number of its churches and chapels it has also been described as "the town with 44 churches". It has approximately 32 km of rocky coastline, with more than twenty beaches. One of the main characteristics of Maratea is the variety of its landscapes, from breath-taking sea views to wooded hillsides and majestic mountains which sweep down to the sea creating steep cliffs. The centre of the town, called Maratea Borgo, (meaning "Maratea's Old Town") is situated on the northern slopes of Mount San Biagio. Maratea is a very peaceful stay, ideal for a relaxing break. Others sights in Maratea include six coastal watchtowers, dating to the 16th-17th centuries. Also the impressive statue of Christ the Redeemer, or the Christ of Maratea, built of pure Carrara marble in 1965 by Bruno Innocenti, a sculptor from Florence. It is located on the top of Monte San Biagio, right in front of the basilica.

Matera, in the south of Italy, is famous as an ancient town of the "Sassi di Matera" (meaning "stones of Matera"). The Sassi are suspected to be some of the first human settlements in Italy. They are well-preserved rock-cut cave settlements. They are a World Heritage site and one of Southern Italy's many important attractions. The Sassi are located on both sides of a valley. The Sasso Caveoso, on the south side, are the most historically interesting. To the north side the Sasso Barisano have been partially commercially developed as offices and housing. Matera also has many beautiful stairways, and some charming churches carved from the soft volcanic rock of the region, including Sant'Agostino, Matera Cathedral, San Giovanni Battista and San Pietro Caveoso. The other attraction is the Tramotano Castle, begun in the 16th Century by Gian Carlo Tramontano, Count of Matera.
