About CalabriaCalabria (known as Bruttium in antiquity), is a region in southern Italy, south of Naples, located at the "toe" of the Italian peninsula. It is bounded to the north by the region of Basilicata, to the south-west by the region of Sicily, to the west by the Tyrrhenian Sea, and to the east by the Ionian Sea. The region covers 15,079 square kilometres and has a population of just over 2 million. The regional capital is Cantanzaro. Still largely undiscovered by tourists Calabria has beautiful coastlines and an ever present tranquil green sea. It is also a mountainous region. Three mountain ranges are present: Pollino, La Sila and Aspromonte. All three mountain ranges are unique with their own flora and fauna. This unique mountainous structure reaches its highest point at Montalto Uffugo, at 1,995 metres, and is full of wide, man-made terraces that slope down towards the sea. The lowest slopes are rich in vineyards and citrus fruit orchards.
Reggio di Calabria is the largest and oldest city in Calabria and is the second oldest city in Italy. It is located on the "toe" of the Italian peninsula and is separated from the island of Sicily by the Strait of Messina. It is situated on the slopes of the Aspromonte, a long, mountain range that runs up through the center of the region. Tourist attractions in Reggio are distributed between the Ionian coast (Costa Jonica), the Tyrrhenian coast (the Costa Viola, Purple Coast) and the Aspromonte mountain behind the city, which contains the natural reserve of Aspromonte National Park. The park offers an amazing panoramic view of the Strait of Messina from the snowy Mount Etna to the Aeolian Islands. The other sights include the Riace bronzes (two famous full-size Greek bronzes of nude bearded warriors that can be seen at the important National Museum of Greater Greece), Cathedral of Reggio Calabria, Aragonese Castle, Chiesa degli Ottimati ("Church of the Optimates"), walls of the ancient city, Villa Zerbi, remains of Roman baths, Pinacoteca Comunale ("Town Art Gallery") and San Gaetano Catanoso church.

Scilla is a coastal town and comune 22 km from the city of Reggio Calabria. Scilla lies in front of the strait of Messina, and it is made up of two parts: the town, where the town offices and the residence of the patronal saint are situated, and Marina di Scilla, the beach-front, which is populated by tourists and thus heavily characterised by hotels and restaurants. The town's coast is the first place north of Reggio Calabria where the waters are not cooled down by the strait draughts. Scila is the traditional site of the sea monster 'Scylla' of Greek mythology. Scylla guarded the narrow Strait of Messina and menaced Odysseus (Ulysses) as he sailed by. The Ruffo Castle, a fortress built by the Dukes of Calabria overlooks the beach. It is said that the origins of the castle date back to Odysseus. Whether you believe the mythological connections or not, the geography of Scilla's impressive castle guarding the shipping route entrance to the town is an importnt site.
