About CampaniaCampania, in southern Italy, has a population of around 5.8 million people and a total area of 13,595 square kilometres. Located on the Italian Peninsula, with the Tyrrhenian Sea to the west, the small Flegrean Islands and Capri with its beautiful beaches are also administratively part of the region. The regional capital of Campania is the city of Naples. Campania is rich in culture, especially in regards to gastronomy, music, architecture, archaeological and ancient sites such as Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum. The name of Campania itself is derived from Latin, as the Romans knew the region as Campania felix, which translates into English as "fertile countryside". The rich natural sights of Campania make it highly important desirable place to visit, especially along the Amalfi Coast, Mount Vesuvius and the island of Capri.
The Amalfi Coast is a stretch of coastline south of Naples. It is renowned for its extraordinary beauty and its iconic medieval cliff side Mediterranean fishing villages, including (from east to west) Positano, Praiano, Furore, Amalfi, Ravello, Maiori and Cetara. Cliffs terraced with scented lemon groves sheer down into sparkling seas and whitewashed villas cling precariously to unforgiving slopes while sea and sky merge in one vast blue horizon. The Amalfi Coast is a truly breath-taking location and is a place which provides total relaxation. The main industry in the area is tourism and visitors are greeted with a smile and accommodated accordingly. The Amalfi Coast offers a generous selection of hotels, bars, restaurants, boutiques and boat trips. Notable places to visit include the Duomo in Amalfi, the church of Santa Maria Assunta in Positano, the churches of San Salvatore del Birecto and of Santa Maria Maddalena in Atrani, Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo in Ravello, the churches of San Luca and San Gennaro in Praiano, the Fiordo of Furore, the church of Santa Trofimena and the ancient Roman villa in Minori, the Emerald Cave in Conca dei Marini and the Path of the Gods ("Sentiero degli Dei") in Agerola.

Capri is a beautiful island in the Tyrrhenian Sea on the south side of the Gulf of Naples. It has been a resort since the time of the Roman Republic. The island is a celebrated beauty spot and well regarded as a classy holiday venue. Features of the island are the Marina Piccola, the Belvedere of Tragara (which is a high panoramic promenade lined with villas), the limestone crags called sea stacks that project above the sea (the Faraglioni), the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), and the ruins of the Imperial Roman villas. Capri, known in Greek mythology as the isle of the sirens, was a favoured resort of the Roman emperors. Most notoriously, the emperor Tiberius had his villa on the island. Legend has it that those who displeased the emperor were flung to their deaths from the cliffs. The island is highly desired and therefore touristy, but it still offers calm and relaxing time to its visitors, in beautiful surroundings.

The city of Pompeii is close to the Bay of Naples. In 79 AD, a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius covered and destroyed Pompeii, killing over 2000 inhabitants. The city was lost for 1,500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. The Volcanic ash and pumice had preserved the city from the time of the eruption all those years earlier. This site is considered to be one of the few sites where an ancient city has been preserved in detail - everything from jars and tables to paintings and people were frozen in time, yielding an unprecedented opportunity to see how the people lived 2000 years ago. The main attractions include the House of the Gladiators, Eumachia, House of Julia Felix, House of Loreius Tiburtinus, House of Menander, House of Sallust, House of the Tragic Poet, House of the Vettii, Lupanar, Macellum of Pompeii, Suburban Baths and the Temple of Isis. Also, visit the "Garden of the Fugitives" at the south-east side where plaster casts of several victims (sadly, including children) are on display where they originally fell. The plants in this garden have been reconstructed to match ancient growth, based on the study of plaster casts of plant roots. Pompeii is a truly breath-taking experience.
