Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano on the Bay of Naples, about 9 kilometres east of Naples. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years, although it is not currently erupting. The two other major active volcanoes in Italy, Etna and Stromboli, are located on the islands of Sicily and Stromboli respectively. Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The volcanic eruption of the volcano covered and destroyed all of Pompeii, killing over 2000 inhabitants. The city was lost for 1,500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. The Volcanic ash and pumice had preserved the city from the time of the eruption all those years earlier. This day tour starts from Naples where you will head to Pompeii for lunch (not included in price) before heading onwards to Mount Vesuvius by bus to the level 1000 metres high. Our guide will then take you another 200 metres up by foot to the crater for some of the most breath-taking views. After spending some time taking in this amazing landmark you will be return to Naples.
