The city of Pompeii is close to the Bay of Naples. In 79 AD, a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius covered and destroyed Pompeii, killing over 2000 inhabitants. The city was lost for 1,500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. The Volcanic ash and pumice had preserved the city from the time of the eruption all those years earlier.
