The city of Pompeii is close to the Bay of Naples. In 79 AD, a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius covered and destroyed Pompeii, killing over 2000 inhabitants. The city was lost for 1,500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. The Volcanic ash and pumice had preserved the city from the time of the eruption all those years earlier. This site is considered to be one of the few sites where an ancient city has been preserved in detail - everything from jars and tables to paintings and people were frozen in time, yielding an unprecedented opportunity to see how the people lived 2000 years ago. With the morning part of this tour you will discover this site and some of the aspects of everyday life in this ancient city. You'll be astonished by the number of villas, shops and public buildings that archaeologists brought back to life. Also, you will stop in a local factory where craftsmen will demonstrate the production process of cameos and corals. After, Pompeii it will be time for your paid for lunch (drinks not included) before heading to Mount Vesuvius. Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano on the Bay of Naples, about 9 kilometres east of Naples. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years, although it is not currently erupting. The two other major active volcanoes in Italy, Etna and Stromboli, are located on the islands of Sicily and Stromboli respectively. Mount Vesuvius is best known for its eruption in AD 79 that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The volcanic eruption of the volcano covered and destroyed all of Pompeii, killing over 2000 inhabitants. The city was lost for 1,500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. The Volcanic ash and pumice had preserved the city from the time of the eruption all those years earlier. You will take a bus up the volcano to the level 1000 metres high. Our guide will then take you another 200 metres up by foot to the crater for some of the most breath-taking views. After spending some time taking in this amazing landmark you will be return to Naples.
Useful information: we suggest that you wear comfortable clothes and shoes for this excursion, and to wear sunglasses and sun hat in the summer months.
