About BolognaBologna from the Latin Bononia, is in the Po Valley of Northern Italy. The city lies between the Po River and the Apennine Mountains, more specifically, between the Reno River and the Savena River. Home to the oldest university in the western world, University of Bologna, founded in 1088, Bologna is one of the most developed cities in Italy. It is much recognised for its architecture, especially its palette of terracotta reds, burnt oranges, and warm yellows, hence the name of Bologna la rossa (Bologna the red). The beautiful town centre, characterized by miles of attractive covered walkways known locally as "porticos", is one of the best-preserved in Europe. Bologna tourist attractions are centred around the town's main square, Piazza Maggiore, and the adjacent Piazza Nettuno, home of the Fontana di Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune). Attractions include Basilica di San Petronio, Due Torri of Bologna two leaning structures (Torre Garisenda and Torre degli Asinelli), Palazzo Comunale, Tombe dei Glossatori (The Glossatori tombs), The Lamborghini Museum and the Pinacoteca Nazionale (art gallery) containing works by local artists and others, including Guido Reni, Raphael, Giotto, Titian and Perugino.
