About RavennaRavenna is a city in the Emilia-Romagna region, about 50 km east of Bologna. The city is inland and connected to the Adriatic Sea by a canal. Ravenna was the capital city of the Western Roman Empire from 402 until 476. It was later the capital of the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths and the Exarchate of Ravenna until 751. Ravenna is is most famous for its fabulous early Christian and Byzantine mosaics. It appeals mainly to Italian lovers who have specialised interests or want to know the greater depths of the country. The streets are never over-crowded and the city is not touristy so there is a real 'local' feel as residents go about there business with no thoughts of tourists.
