About Friuli-Venezia Giulia holidays

Friuli-Venezia Giulia is one of five autonomous regions of Italy with special statute. The capital is Trieste. It has an area of 7,856 square kilometres and about 1.2 million inhabitants. A natural opening to the sea for many Central European countries, the region is traversed by the major transport routes between the east and west of southern Europe. It encompasses the historical-geographical region of Friuli and the geographical region of Venezia Giulia (known in English also as Julian March), each with its own distinct history, traditions and identity. Friuli-Venezia Giulia is famous for its mixtures of cuisine stemming from both Friulani and Giuliani traditions. With influences from key cities such as Udine, Trieste and Venice. Friuli-Venezia Giulia is also known for its fine wine. The region spans a wide variety of climates and landscapes from the mild Mediterranean climate in the south to Alpine continental in the north.

Trieste, Piazza Unita Trieste
Trieste is a city in North-East Italy. Previously a very powerful and influential centre of politics, literature, music, art and culture under Austrian-Hungarian dominion, its importance fell into decline towards the end of the 20th century. Today, Trieste is often forgotten as tourists head off to the more popular Italian cities like Rome and Florence. But, it is a very charming underestimated city, with a quiet and lovely almost Eastern European atmosphere, several bars and cafes, some stunning architecture and a beautiful sea view. Trieste elegantly combines old Roman architecture, Austrian empire architecture (similar to that in Vienna) and a nice Métis sage of Mediterranean styles. Some of the main attractions include Miramar Castle, Castle of San Giusto, Basilica of St. Silvester, Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Church of San Nicolò dei Greci, Synagogue of Trieste, Temple of Monte Grisa, Basilica Forense, Palaeochristian Basilica, Arch of Riccardo, a Roman amphitheatre, Civico Orto Botanico di Trieste, Val Rosandra National Park, and Piazza Unità d'Italia.

Udine Udine
Udine is a city, which is located in the middle of Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It lies between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps (Alpi Carniche), less than 40 km from the Slovenian border. Udine has been under occupancy twice in the last century. During World War I, it was occupied by Austrians in 1918 until after the Battle of Vittorio Veneto in 1918. Also, when Italy surrendered to the Allies in World War II, the city was under direct German administration, which ceased in April 1945. The city host two major festivals each year; the Fruili D.O.C wine and food festival in September, and the biggest European festival of popular East Asian cinema, the Far East Film Festival, in April. Udine also has many sights that can be enjoyed. On the main square (Piazza della Libertà) stands the town hall (Loggia del Lionello) built in 1448-1457 in the Venetian-Gothic style opposite a clock tower (Torre dell'Orologio) resembling that of the Piazza San Marco at Venice. Other impressive attractions include Loggia di San Giovanni, the Cathedral of Udine, Udine Castle and Orto Botanico Friulano (a botanical garden).
