About Udine

Udine is a city, which is located in the middle of Friuli-Venezia Giulia region. It lies between the Adriatic Sea and the Alps (Alpi Carniche), less than 40 km from the Slovenian border. Udine has been under occupancy twice in the last century. During World War I, it was occupied by Austrians in 1918 until after the Battle of Vittorio Veneto in 1918. Also, when Italy surrendered to the Allies in World War II, the city was under direct German administration, which ceased in April 1945. The city host two major festivals each year; the Fruili D.O.C wine and food festival in September, and the biggest European festival of popular East Asian cinema, the Far East Film Festival, in April. Udine also has many sights that can be enjoyed. On the main square (Piazza della Libertà) stands the town hall (Loggia del Lionello) built in 1448-1457 in the Venetian-Gothic style opposite a clock tower (Torre dell'Orologio) resembling that of the Piazza San Marco at Venice. Other impressive attractions include Loggia di San Giovanni, the Cathedral of Udine, Udine Castle and Orto Botanico Friulano (a botanical garden).
