Euro About Rome pilgrimage packageThe Vatican City is an independent state within Rome that is run by the Pope, and serves as the world headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. The Vatican meets Rome at the breath-taking sight of St Peter's Basilica (Italian: Basilica di San Pietro in Vaticano), which was built on the burial site of one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, Peter, hence the name of this famous landmark. The Vatican City is surrounded by medieval and Renaissance walls that seperate it from the city beyond. The Papal Swiss Guard still dress in the colourful uniforms of the Renaissance era and guard the city walls. Every Wednesday pilgirms and visitors have the chance to see Pope Benedict XVI at the 'Papal Audience' event. St Peter's Basilica is one of the four famous basilicas of Rome, the other three being St Paul's Basilica (Italian: Basilica di San Paolo fuori le Mura), St Mary Major Basilica (Italian: Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore) and St John Lateran Basilica (Italian: Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano). |
