The imposing Colosseum was started in 72 AD under the Emperor Vespasian and was completed in 80 AD under Emperor Titus, with further modifications being made during Domitian's reign (81-96). Capable of seating 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on classical mythology. Occupying a site just west of the Colosseum is the Roman Forum (Italian: Foro Romano) is a rectangular plaza surrounded by the ruins of several important ancient government buildings at the center of the city. It was for centuries the centre of Roman public life. And standing 40 meters above the Roman is the Palatine Hill, which is the centre most of the Seven Hills of Rome and is one of the most ancient parts of the city.
