About Tivoli Villa d'Este tour

Villa d'Este is a fine example of Renaissance architecture. It was commissioned in the 16th century by Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, son of Alfonso I d'Este and grandson of Pope Alexander VI. He was appointed Governor of Tivoli by Pope Julius III, with the gift of the existing villa, which he entirely reconstructed to plans of Pirro Ligorio carried out under the direction of the Ferrarese architect-engineer Alberto Galvani. The palace was built over a Benedictine convent and contains delightfully frescoed reception rooms. However, the main attraction for visitors is the beautiful gardens. The Villa d'Este's gardens are composed of many water features and fountains. The is a wide range of impressive fountains from the grand 'Fountain of the Dragons' and 'Hundred Fountains', to a miniature watery reproduction of Rome. The centrepiece, the gigantic Water Organ Fountain, cascades down a huge drop into quiet, shady pools.

Our tour guide can take you around Villa d'Este, allowing you to discover every aspect of the Villa with a detailed description of the history of this famous location. Alternatively, you may prefer us to just supply you tickets so you can spend the day discovering the Villa at your own pace.
