About GenoaGenoa (Italian: Genova) is an important seaport city in northern Italy. The urban area is known as la Superba ("the Superb one") due to its glorious past. Part of the old city of Genoa was added to the World Heritage List (UNESCO) in 2006. The city's rich art, music, gastronomy, architecture and history, made it 2004's EU Capital of Culture. Genoa is known to have one of Europe's biggest historical centres. It's made up of hundreds of tiny streets and alleys called Caruggi, which resemble the feel of ancient times, when Genoa was the most important harbour of the Mediterranean Sea. Genoa is the home of the famous explorer Cristofo Colombo (Christopher Columbus) whose natal house can be found at Piazza Dante. Cattedrale di San Lorenzo is the city's Cathedral, and is built in a Romanesque-Renaissance style. Other important and major churches in Genoa include the Church of San Donato, Church of Sant'Agostino, the Oratory of San Giacomo della Marina and the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato. Other sights include the Piazza De Ferrari (home of the Opera and the Palace of the Doges) and the Villetta Di Negro and Villa Durazzo Pallavicini public parks.
