About LiguriaLiguria is a coastal region in north-western Italy with a population of around 1.6 million inhabitants and an area of 5,420 square kilometres. It is a popular region with tourists for its beautiful beaches, picturesque little towns, and good food. Liguria borders France to the west and lies on the Ligurian Sea. The narrow strip of land is bordered by the sea, the Alps and the Apennines mountains. The regional capital Genoa, home to Christopher Columbus, boasts impressive buildings, elegant mansions, and wonderful churches - all of which bear witness to Liguria's glorious past and which blend in perfectly with the modern city. In other parts of Liguria, there are also numerous historical treasures. An intact and luxuriant Mediterranean vegetation exists in the mountain regions of Portofino and Cinque Terre. Furthermore, Portovenere is a small jewel on the Mediterranean coast and Sanremo is one of Italy's most famous bathing resorts and the place where the annual Italian pop music festival takes place. Also, the beautiful Benedict monastery S. Fruttuoso merits special attention. And needless to say there are many other important historical monuments to be explored.
Cinque Terre (Italian: Five Lands) is a rugged strip of the Liguria coastline made up of five fishing villages; Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cinque Terre is characterised by its beautiful landscape. Mediterranean herbs and trees grow spontaneously from the top of the hills down to the water level. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach it from the outside. Cinque Terre has some of the best coastline hiking trails in the world. The path from Riomaggiore to Manarola is called the Via Dell'Amore ("Lovers Walk"). In the middle of the hike is 'The Lover's Lock' which is a place to seal your eternal love. At this point there is a concrete throne in the shape of a male and female locked in a kiss, where many people duplicate this creating a loving photographic opportunity. Remember to bring a small lock to attach to one of the many gates or rails to seal your eternal love in Cinque Terre.

Genoa (Italian: Genova) is an important seaport city in northern Italy. The urban area is known as la Superba ("the Superb one") due to its glorious past. Part of the old city of Genoa was added to the World Heritage List (UNESCO) in 2006. The city's rich art, music, gastronomy, architecture and history, made it 2004's EU Capital of Culture. Genoa is known to have one of Europe's biggest historical centres. It's made up of hundreds of tiny streets and alleys called Caruggi, which resemble the feel of ancient times, when Genoa was the most important harbour of the Mediterranean Sea. Genoa is the home of the famous explorer Cristofo Colombo (Christopher Columbus) whose natal house can be found at Piazza Dante. Cattedrale di San Lorenzo is the city's Cathedral, and is built in a Romanesque-Renaissance style. Other important and major churches in Genoa include the Church of San Donato, Church of Sant'Agostino, the Oratory of San Giacomo della Marina and the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata del Vastato. Other sights include the Piazza De Ferrari (home of the Opera and the Palace of the Doges) and the Villetta Di Negro and Villa Durazzo Pallavicini public parks.

La Spezia lies at the head of the Gulf of La Spezia. The city is located between Genoa and Pisa on the Ligurian Sea. It is one of the main Italian military and commercial harbours and hosts one of Italy's biggest military industries, OTO Melara. Its strong military history (much seen at the Museo Tecnico Navale) and mild climate makes La Spezia a popular tourist destination. La Spezia is well-connected by transport and makes a good, affordable base for exploring other nearby locations; Cinque Terre, the Italian Riviera, Porto Venere, San Terenzio and Portofino. The town spreads across the inside of the Golfo dei Poeti, the Gulf of Poets and has lovely views inland, towards the Apuan Alps. La Spezia has the following churches; Cristo Re dei Secoli ("Christ the King of Centuries", Cathedral), Abbey Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Church of Santi Giovanni e Agostino. Others attractions include many museums (including the Ubaldo Formentini Civic Museum and Palazzina delle Arti) and the Castle of San Giorgio (built by Niccolo Fieschi in 1262).

Portofino is a small Italian fishing village on the Italian Riviera. The town, crowded round its small harbour, is well regarded as one of the most beautiful Mediterranean ports. The town is closely associated with many beautiful beaches, which are a few minutes up the coast, such as, Paraggi, Camogli, Chiavari, Lavagna, and Sestri Levante. The main sights in Portofino include the Statue of Christ of the Abyss (placed 17 metres underwater to protect fishermen and scuba divers and in memory of Duilio Marcante), Castello Brown (16th century), Church of St. Martin (Divo Martino) and the Oratory of Santa Maria Assunta, (Gothic style). However, the main attraction of Portofino, is the town itself. The town is made up of little streets leading up from the harbour with many quaint shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants. Portofino is a highly desired holiday destination for the affluent tourist. The amazing harbour (hosting a variety of yachts and boats), the beautiful nearby beaches and the tranquil town make it a must visit location.
