About MarcheMarche is known as The Marches in English. Marche is located in the Central area of the country, bordering Emilia-Romagna and the republic of San Marino to the north, Tuscany to the north-west, Umbria to the west, Abruzzo and Lazio to the south and the Adriatic Sea to the east. The regional capital in Ancona. The town is finely situated on and between the slopes of the two extremities of the promontory of Monte Conero, Monte Astagno (occupied by the citadel) and Monte Guasco (on which the Duomo stands 150 metres high). The latter, dedicated to St Judas Cyriacus, is said to occupy the site of a temple of Venus, who is mentioned by Catullus and Juvenal as the tutelary deity of the place. Marche has a population of 15 million inhabitants and covers an area of 9,366 square kilometres. The coastal area is 173 km long and is relatively flat and straight except for the hilly area between Gabicce and Pesaro in the north, and the eastern slopes of Monte Conero.
Ancona is a city and a seaport, situated on the Adriatic Sea. The town is finely situated on two hills that form an amphitheatre around the harbour. It was settled in the 4th Century BC by Greek colonists from Syracuse. Later, the Romans exploited its sheltered anchorage and in 115 AD, under the Emperor Trajan, the present harbour walls were raised. The stately ceremonial marble arch standing forlornly at the end of the docks marks his achievement. The main attraction is the Cathedral of Ancona, dedicated to S. Ciriaco, which is a fine Romanesque building in grey stone, built in the form of a Greek cross, and other elements of Byzantine art. Other sights include the Arch of Trajan, Lazzaretto, Episcopal Palace, Church of Santa Maria della Piazza, Palazzo del Comune, Church of San Francesco alle Scale, Church of Sant'Agostino, Palazzo Benincasa, Loggia dei Mercanti and the Pinacoteca Civica Francesco Podestri Gallery.

Urbino is a walled city that is recognised a World Heritage Site. The city has a remarkable historical legacy of independent Renaissance culture, especially under the patronage of Federico da Montefeltro, who was duke of Urbino in the 15th Century. The town, nestled on a high sloping hillside, retains much of its picturesque medieval aspect. It hosts the University of Urbino, founded in 1506, and its best-known architectural piece is the Palazzo Ducale, rebuilt by Luciano Laurana. It houses the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, one of the most important collections of Renaissance paintings in the world. Other interesting buildings include Palazzo Albani, Palazzo Odasi, Palazzo Passionei and the Albornoz Fortress. Churches to see include the Duomo (which houses the famous Last Supper by Federico Barocci), San Giovanni Battista, Sant'Agostino, San Francesco and the Oratory of San Giuseppe. Urbino is also home to the Orto Botanico "Pierina Scaramella" botanical garden.
