About MoliseThe Molise region in the South of the country is the second smallest of the regions in Italy. It was formerly (until 1963) part of the region of Abruzzi e Molise (with Abruzzo) and is now a separate entity. The region covers 4,438 sqaure kilometres and has a population of about 300,000 inhabitants. Molise is the newest Italian region, since it was established in 1963, when the region Abruzzi e Molise was split in two. It became effective only in 1970. The region is administratively divided into two Provinces, Campobasso, the regional capital, and Isernia, and comprises 136 municipalities, most of them very small, and each unique and definitely worth a visit.
Campobasso is the capital of the Molise region. It is located in the high basin of the Biferno River, surrounded by the Sannio and Matese mountains. Campobasso is renowned for the craftmanship of blades (including scissors and knives), which has been well documented since the 14th century. It is also famous for the production of pears and scamorza cheese. The city is the home of the University of Molise and of the Archdiocese of Campobasso-Boiano. The main attraction of Campobasso is the Castello Monforte. The castle has Guelph merlons and stands on a commanding point, where traces of ancient settlements have been found. Next to the castle is the Chiesa della Madonna del Monte (Santa Maria Maggiore), which houses a precious wooden statue of the Incoronata from 1334. Below the castle, the church of St. George is probably the oldest in Campobasso, built around the year 1000 AD over the ruins of a Pagan temple. Other attractions include Chiesa della Santissima Trinità ruins, Church of San Bartolomeo, Church of San Leonardo and Villa de Capoa.
