La Maddalena

La Maddalena is the largest town in the Maddalena archipelago. The archipelago sits just 2 kilometres from the north eastern shore of Sardinia in the Straits of Bonifacio. The archipelago is renowned for many beautiful and secluded beaches. La Maddalena is the only island of the archipelago that has urban settlement. It can be reached by ferry from the port of Palau in northern Sardinia (5 ferries run a 24 hour service). Also the more adventurous tourists may wish to hire a speed boat out for the day and sail from Palau (or one of the neighbouring villages such as Cannigione) to La Maddalena or some of the other secluded beaches in the archipelago that can only be reached by boat. La Maddalena is also home to a USA Navy base, with 4000 military staff operating from the Islands.
