About Trentino-Alto Adige

Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol is an autonomous region in Northern Italy. It consists of two provinces: Trento and Bolzano (Bozen). The region was part of Austria-Hungary and its predecessors, the Austrian Empire and the Holy Roman Empire from the 8th century until its annexation by Italy in 1919. Together with the Austrian state of Tyrol it is represented by the Euro region Tyrol-South Tyrol-Trentino. In English, the region is also known as Trentino-South Tyrol or by its Italian name Trentino-Alto Adige. The region is bordered by Tyrol (Austria) to the north, by Graubünden (Switzerland) to the north-west and by the Italian regions of Lombardy and Veneto to the west and south, respectively. It covers 13,607 square kilometres and has a population of around 1 million inhabitants. It is extremely mountainous, covering a large part of the Dolomites and the Southern Alps. The regional capital is Trento.
Bolzano Bolzano
Bolzano (German: Bozen) is the capital city of the Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol region, sitting close to the Italy/Austria border. Before World War I, Bolzano was part of the Austro-Hungarian county of Tyrol, after which it became annexed by Italy and subjected to an intensive Italianization. During World War II, Bolzano was the site of the Nazi Bolzano Transit Camp, a concentration camp for Jews and political prisoners. Today, Bolzano is the seat of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano. It is also home of the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano is where the ice mummy "Ötzi" is kept. The city is also the home of the Italian Army's Alpini High Command (COMALP) and some of its combat and support units. The city, with its medieval city centre, Gothic and Romanesque churches and bilingual signage give it a unique flavour of a city at the crossroads between Italian and Austrian cultures. This and its natural and cultural attractions make it a renowned tourist destination. The major monuments and sights include Walther Square, the Gothic Cathedral, Old Parish church of Gries, Castle Maretsch, Runkelstein Castle, Firmian/Sigmundskron Castle, Victory Monument and Messner Mountain Museum of Reinhold Messner.

Madonna di Campiglio Madonna di Campiglio
Madonna di Campiglio is a discreet and elegant town in the Trentino-Alto Adige region. The town sits at an altitude of 1550 metres in the stupendous valley between the Brenta Dolomites and the glaciers of Adamello and Presanella. It is recognised as Italy's number one ski resort as well as one of the most important resorts in the Alps. The variety of its mountain surroundings mean that in winter it is possible to ski over many kilometres of runs, up to an altitude of 2600 metres, with various levels of difficulty. Madona di Campiglio boasts 57 lifts and 150 km of ski runs, with a capacity of more than 31,000 people per hour. The resort's ski area covers 50,000 square metres of snow park, 40 kilometres for Nordic skiing and, from winter 2011/2012, skiers will be able to link up to the pistes in Pinzolo (along with the existing link to Folgarida and Marilleva).

Merano Merano
Merano (German: Meran) is a northern Italian town less than 10 km from the Italy/Austria border. The town it is located within a basin, surrounded by mountains standing up to 3,335 m and is best known for its spa resorts. Merano sits at the entrance to the Passeier Valley, the Vinschgau and the Ulten Valley. In the past the town has been a popular place of residence for several scientists, literates and artists, including Franz Kafka, Ezra Pound and Paul Lazarsfeld, who all appreciated its mild climate. Merano attracts holiday-makers throughout the year and is known for hotels of high standards, comfort, service and good food. There are 52 romantic, old castles in and around the town, some used as hotels or museums while others are still private residences. Merano is a great place for walking enthusiasts, with the famous Tappiener Walk, as well as many other activities, including canoeing, winter sports, horse racing course and the Thermal Spa Centre. Among the town's attractions include the Museum of Tourism, which shows the historical development of tourism in the province, and the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, a botanical garden. Both sites are located in the Trauttmansdorff Castle. Also impressive are the Steinerner Steg ("stone bridges") across the Passer and the medieval Ortenstein tower, popularly called Pulverturm ("powder tower").

Trent, Dolomites Trento
Trento (German: Trient) is located in the Adige River valley in Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol. Trento is a major scientific, educational, political and financial centre. Today, Trento is a cosmopolitan city with highly-developed and organized modern social services. The city offers a great quality of life, standard of living, and business and job opportunities. Trento is also one of Italy's wealthiest and most prosperous cities with its province being one of the richest in Italy. The city is home of the University of Trento and has a picturesque Medieval and Renaissance historic centre, with ancient buildings such as Trento Cathedral and the Castello del Buonconsiglio. Other sights in Trento include the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, Church of San Pietro, Church of Sant'Apollinare, Church of San Lorenze, Torre Verde, Palazzo delle Albere, Palazzo Pretorio and Palazzo Salvadori. Trento also has some interesting museums, including Museo d'Arte di Trento e Roverto and the Museo dell'Aeronautica Gianni Caproni, as well as the Alpine botanical garden. Trento is also the venue of a popular Mountain Film Festival.
