Elba Island

Elba Island (Italian: isola d'Elba) is a Mediterranean island in Tuscany, about 20 kilometres from the coastal town of Piombino on mainland Italy. It is the third largest island in Italy after Sicily and Sardinia. Elba is also the largest island of the Tuscan Archipelago. The other islands in the archipelago include Montecristo, Giglio, Pianosa, Capraia, Gorgona, Giannutri. Elba Island is located between the Tyrrhenian Sea and Ligurian Sea, about 50 kilometres east of the French island of Corsica. The island is also the famous home of Napoleon Bonaparte for almost a year of his life. After the Treaty of Fontainebleau, Napoleon was exiled to Elba after his forced abdication in 1814. The main town on Elba Island is Portoferraio. The town is home of the Portoferraio harbour and ferries run from here to mainland Italy many times daily. Attractions in the town include Forte Stella, Forte Falcone, Forte Inglese, the archaeological museum and Napoleons House.
