About GrossetoGrosseto lies 14 km from the Tyrrhenian Sea. It is situated in the Maremma, at the centre of an alluvial plain, on the Ombrone river. The origins of the city can be traced back to the High Middle Ages. Writer Andrea da Grosseto was born in Grosseto in the 13th Century. He is considered very important in Italian literature, as the first writer in the Italian language. Grosseto has more than 40 Churches, Palaces, Abbeys and Theatres, as well as a Romanesque cathedral, giving visitors to the city much to see. Other monuments in Grosseto include the Canapone Monument, Roman column at Piazza Dante, Unknown Soldier Monument (honouring the victims of World War I and World War II), Andrea da Grosseto Monument, Ettore Socci Monument, The Etruscian site of Roselle, Granducal villa of Albrese and three separate wells (Well of Spedale, Well of Buffalo and Well of Fortezza).
