About LivornoLivorno is a port city on the western edge of Tuscany facing the Ligurian Sea. It has a population of approximately 160,000 inhabitants and is home to the Medici Port, which supports substantial cruise-ship tourism to Florence and other destinations in Tuscany and Umbria. Livorno was a popular city during the Italian Renaissance. Today, the history of the city can be identified through the structure of its neighbourhoods, crossed by canals and surrounded by fortified town walls and towers/fortresses leading to the town centre. The city has a Venice district, where much of its original town planning and architectural features remains such as the bridges, narrow lanes, and a dense network of canals. The main attractions of Livorno include the works and operas by the great composer Pietro Mascagni (Museo Mascagnano), the Sanctuary of Montenero, Mounumento dei Quattro mori and an old red-brick fortress that defended the city from attack by pirates in Medici times (tts three bastions are named Capitana, Ampolletta and Canaviglia).
