About LuccaLucca, in central Italy, is situated on the Serchio River in a fertile plain near the Tyrrhenian Sea. The city is famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls, which is now a pedestrian promenade and makes for a pleasant walk around the old town. Its long history goes back to Etruscan and Ancient Roman times, and the city retains many examples of Ancient architecture. Lucca's main prominence in architecture comes from the Gothic era. The main sights in Lucca include a Roman amphitheatre, Diavolo Bridge, Ilaria del Carretto's Sarcophagus, Torre Guinigi, Torre dell Ore (ancient clock tower), Church of San Michel, Church of San Frediano, Via Fillungo and the Duomo di San Martino (Cathedral). Lucca is also the birth place of famous Italian composer Giacomo Puccini, whose work includes La bohème, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Turandot.
