About PisaPisa sits on the right bank of the mouth of the River Arno in central Italy and faces the Ligurian Sea. Pisa is famed worldwide for the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which is the bell tower of the city's cathedral. Pisa contains over 20 other historic churches, several palaces and museums. The city is also home of the University of Pisa, which dates back to the 12th century. This area, at the edge of the town centre, hosts an array of monuments, all architecturally exquisite. Along with the Leaning Tower there is a Romanesque cathedral, Museo del Duomo, Museo delle Sinopie, a large baptistery and Campo Santo ("the Holy Field"). This is a holy cemetery that is said to have been laid with earth brought back from the Holy Land by the Crusaders. Pisa also has many churches including the Church of Santo Stefano dei Cavalieri, the Church of San Nicola and the Church of San Francesco. Also, at the Piazza dei Cavalieri ("Knight's Square"), where the Palazzo della Carovana can be seen, with its impressive facade designed by Giorgio Vasari.
