Assisi

Assisi is an old town, which has many narrow and steep lanes making it very picturesque. Since the 1997 earthquake, Assisi has been carefully rebuilt and restored. Assisi has had a rich tradition of art through the centuries and is now home to a number of well known artistic works. Artists Pietro Lorenzetti and Simone Martini worked shoulder to shoulder in the town. Assisi's history is dominated by the unpretentious figure of St. Francis (San Francesco), whose followers filled the little town with churches, monasteries and shrines, including The Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi, The Franciscan monastery, il Sacro Convento, Santa Maria Maggiore, The Cathedral of San Rufino, Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli, Chiesa Nuova, Santo Stefano and Eremo delle Carceri and many more.
