San Marco Basilica is the cathedral church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Venice. It lies at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, adjacent and connected to the Doge's Palace. Originally it was the chapel of the Doge, and has only been the city's cathedral since 1807. Doge's Palace (Italian: Palazzo Ducale), was the seat of the Venetian political power for many centuries. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice. In the splendid rooms of the Palace, immersed hundreds of works of art, the Duke and his Council controlled the fate of a thousand-year history of the Republic.
