Approx: 3 hours
With this tour you will visit the historical centre of Venice and the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale). Our guide will lead you around the various important building of years gone by that are located in the centre of Venice and then on to a visit inside Doge's Palace. The palace was the residence of the Doge of Venice, the supreme authority of the Republic of Venice. Being the ducal residence, the palace housed political institutions of the Republic of Venice until the Napoleonic occupation of the city in 1797. Venice was ruled by aristocratic elite, but there was a facility for citizens to submit written complaints at what was known as the Bussola chamber. The principal function of Doge's Palace was to provide a space for the government to carry out its civic responsibilities to the people. The Doge did, in fact, reside in the palazzo, however, he held no real power and was very much just representative figurehead for the Republic. Today, the building is preserved as a museum. Our tour guide will lead you through the halls of power, plunging you into historical context of the European Middle Ages and the immediately following centuries. You will witness rich details of the gold staircase and the mesmerising realism of the scenes depicted by many artists who have decorated this building, including work by Tintoretto and Paolo Veronese.
* Please note, entrance to the Palazzo requires appropriate attire. No shorts, miniskirts or uncovered shoulders.
