About this tour
St Peter's Basilica is the heart of Christianity. It is a place where faith, history and art fuse together in a unique synthesis of majesty and beauty. This tour is an official tour of the Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi (ORP), which is a branch of the Vicariate of Rome, organ of the Holy See directed by the Cardinal Vicar of the Pope. The ORP is the official organisation supporting all pilgrimage activities within Rome.
The tour begins with the first niche constructed over St Peter's burial place, onto the Basilica erected by Constantine, in order to arrive at the one we admire today: the fruit of the prophetic vision of the Popes of the Renaissance era and of the 1600s. This tour visits all the naves and the chapels within this beautiful Basilica. Also you will be able to soak up the works within these naves and chapels, where the genius and imagination of great artists like Michelangelo, Bernini and Rafael expressed some of the greatest human achievements from history. Within each monument, you will also see the living history of the people, Popes, saints and queens, who gave their life for the Church in the era in which they lived.
