All About Emilia-Romagna

If you’re thinking about a holiday in Italy, then you may be looking at the more popular regions in Italy, such as Lazio (where you’ll find Rome), Tuscany or Veneto (home to Venice and Verona). So, let us throw a curve-ball on to the scene: what about Emilia-Romagna?

Emilia-Romagna in Northern Italy offers the sort of diversity and iconic cities that really appeals for a varied holiday in Italy, and we particularly recommend this region for a family holiday, when you want to be sure to include something to suit everyone’s tastes and preferences.

The region is home to famous Italian cities, such as Bologna, Parma and Modena, as well as vibrant coastal resorts, such as Rimini. Besides the better-known cities, Emilia-Romagna also offers the most charming hidden gems, where you can discover rare mosaics, quaint architecture and the draw of authentic Italian culture that you can enjoy away from the crowds – we particularly love Ravenna and Ferrara for their mix of Mediterranean vibrancy and cultural attractions.

How to Get There

The main international airport in the Emilia-Romagna region is Bologna International and there are several airlines offering flights, including Ryanair and EasyJet.

If you are planning to start your vacation in a different city to Bologna, then you can catch the train from Bologna Centrale to your destination*, pre-arrange a private car transfer or you can hire a car. Note that we always recommend pre-arranging your transport to avoid taxi scams and to get the best price – as a part of our customised travel service, we will obviously arrange all of this for you, whether you would prefer a chauffeur-driven transfer or a hire car, so there is nothing to worry about!

*We suggest buying train tickets in advance as trains in major cities can get very busy during peak times.

Where to Stay in Emilia-Romagna

We recommend basing yourself in one of the main cities on your Emilia-Romagna holiday (Bologna is the perfect choice), as you will then easily be able to visit other cities for the day and travel around the region using the efficient Italian rail network.

However, if you would prefer to have more time exploring Emilia-Romagna, why not opt for a multi-centre tour of the region? Such a tour will allow you to spend a couple of nights in different Emilia-Romagna cities, allowing you to relax and explore the charming sights at your own pace. One of our favourite combinations for an Emilia-Romagna multi-centre holiday is Parma, Modena, Bologna, Ferrara and Ravenna, but there are endless options and combinations – if you are interested in a multi-city tour of Emilia-Romagna and are unsure where to go, why not send us an online enquiry? We will put together the perfect holiday itinerary for you that takes in to account your individual needs and preferences.

Emilia-Romagna Sightseeing

One thing is certain: you will not be at a loss for things to see and do on a vacation to Emilia-Romagna! However, where you visit depends on what you want to see and experience. That said, there are a few must-sees that we recommend incorporating into your vacation and here are some of our favourites:

Bologna

  • Food markets in Bologna – they don’t call it “Bologna the Fat One” for nothing and this is the perfect experience for foodies!
  • If you enjoy shopping, stop by Via dell’Archiginnasio, which is home to some of the most exclusive shops in Bologna
  • Basilica of San Petronio and the famous "whispering gallery"

Ferrara

  • Many of the best attractions are centrally located, such as the Estense Castle and the Jewish Ghetto, making sightseeing a breeze in Ferrara
  • We recommend taking some time to see the famous Este Palaces, including Schifanoia, the Romei house or Palazzina Marfisa d'Este

Parma

Ravenna

Modena (the perfect choice for motor-heads)

  • Museo Casa Enzo Ferrari (a museum dedicated to the Ferrari car)
  • If you have a special interest in Italian cars, we also recommend taking a day trip from Modena to Maranello, where you’ll find a fascinating Ferrari Museum
