Discover Your Roots on a Customized Ancestry Tour of Italy

Between 1820 and 2004, around 5.5 million Italians immigrated to the USA, with nearly 85% of them travelling from South Italy and Sicily.

If you’re part-Italian then it may always have been a dream of yours to visit the Italian city or town that your ancestors once called home, and this can be a wonderful way to discover more about your family heritage and culture, and even to understand yourself.

We have recently launched a tailor-made Ancestry Tour, which allows you to visit the Italian cities that hold a special place in your family’s heart, as well as popular attractions and iconic Italian landmarks. If you’re thinking about an Ancestry Tour in Italy but are unsure which cities combine well then here are our recommendations. But keep in mind that our Ancestry Tour of Italy is completely customized, as one of our travel experts will create the tour to suit your personal wishes, including the cities visited, the accommodation and fun tours and activities. With Naples

If your forefathers came from Naples then you may be eager to visit the city, sample authentic pizza and learn about your heritage. While Naples is known for its art, culture and rich history, we would actually recommend staying in Sorrento as a base for your Ancestry Tour. Sorrento is a very pretty town on the south coast and is just 30 miles from Naples, meaning that you can easily reach Naples on a day excursion. It is well known for its fragrant lemon groves, the lemons from which are used to make limoncello, as well as its boutique shops, tranquil atmosphere and sunny port. As well as enjoying a day tour to Naples from Sorrento, you can also visit the stunning islands of Capri and Ischia, the simply beautiful Amalfi Coast, and the ancient lost city of Pompeii, which is considered one of the world’s most important archeological sites. You can also stop in other popular Italian cities as Rome, Florence and Venice can all be easily reached from Sorrento thanks to Italy’s excellent train network.

With Sicily

Sicily is a sunny island off the “toe” of Italy’s mainland and is well known for its relaxed atmosphere, sandy beaches and historic towns, some of which featured in the Godfather II movie. Popular cities include Palermo, Taormina and Catania, while Cefalu offers the best beaches. If your ancestors were from Catania and you’re vacationing in the city, we recommend enjoying an exhilarating day trip to Mount Etna – one of Italy’s active volcanoes or, for a cultural day trip, visit Agrigento, which is on Sicily’s south coast. It is home to the Valley of the Temples – a UNESCO World Heritage Site with well-preserved ancient Greek temples and forums. If you have never been to Italy before, we would recommend visiting some of the popular cities on the mainland before enjoying Sicily, such as Venice, Tuscany and Milan, so that you can enjoy the vibrancy of the cities before relaxing in Sicily.

With Calabria

Calabria is a region just south of Naples in the “toe” of Italy that has remained largely undiscovered by tourists, making it a hidden gem waiting to be explored. It features beautiful coastlines and emerald green waters that will have you wondering why your ancestors ever moved away! Because of its position in the south, you can visit other South Italy attractions while on your ancestry vacation, such as Alberobello, which is home to the famous trulli – fairytale-like limestone houses that date back to the 14th century and are simply magical to visit! If you are interested in visiting the unique parts of Italy on your Ancestry Tour, take a peek at our Rome, Alberobello, Bari & Lecce tour – it is completely customizable, meaning that one of our travel experts will tailor the vacation to your needs, creating a personalized itinerary just for you.

With Abruzzo

Abruzzo is perhaps Italy’s best kept secret and one of the most diverse regions of the country, where you can lounge on the beach in the summer or hit the ski slopes in the winter. The region is diverse enough that you could very much enjoy an Italy ancestry vacation touring just Abruzzo, perhaps visiting Pescara for its thriving city atmosphere and L’Aquila for its Baroque and Renaissance architecture. However, it is just 50 miles east of Rome, meaning you could also visit the region on a day trip from the capital. If you choose this latter option, then why not also visit other Italian icons, such as Florence and Venice so that you truly make the most of your vacation time?
