Florence welcomes back the Giant Apennine!

The Giant Apennine (Gigante dell’Appennino) sculpture is back on display at the Villa di Pratolino near Florence after it had been closed to visitors for three years due to restoration work.

The sculpture, which stands ten metres tall, was made by Giambologna and carves an impressive rockwork figure standing guard over a pretty pond beneath it. Restoration work has focused on securing the caves, which are intricately decorated with frescoes, as well as the rooms and inner passageways that form a part of the sculpture. The giant has also been carefully cleaned, revealing the original colours, and a water fountain again springs from the mouth of a snake under the giant’s left hand.

See the sculpture for yourself on a Bellarome holiday to Florence.
