From Venice to Sorrento, with Florence and Rome In Between: Our Most Popular Multi-centre Holiday

Take in the most iconic cities in Italy while also making time for coastal relaxation with a multi-centre holiday to Venice, Florence, Rome and Sorrento – here’s how.

Italy is a firm favourite on many travel enthusiasts’ bucket list thanks to its wealth of cultural attractions, rich history, vibrant city life and idyllic beaches and coastal resorts. If you’re thinking about a multi-centre holiday to Italy but are unsure which cities to visit, we recommend starting with a Venice, Florence, Rome and Sorrento multi-centre – our most popular Italy holiday.

However, planning a vacation to four cities in one trip can seem daunting if you don’t rely on the expertise of a specialist tour operator. If you’re going it alone and planning a DIY Italy holiday, here are our top tips for a smooth Venice, Florence, Rome and Sorrento vacation.

Venice to Florence

Venice has two main airports: Venice Marco Polo and Venice Treviso. The main airport is Venice Marco Polo, but depending on your chosen airline you may fly into Venice Treviso.

If you arrive at Venice Marco Polo, you will need to take a water taxi to your hotel, assuming it is on the main island. This is best booked in advance as the water taxis tend to be busy and you can be sure of a better price if you book with a reputable company in advance.

If you arrive at Treviso, you will first need to take a taxi to Piazzale Roma and then a water taxi from there to your hotel. Again, this is best booked in advance.

After enjoying the delights of the Floating City, it’s time to travel south to Florence. We recommend taking a train transfer from Venice Santa Lucia train station to Florence Santa Maria Novella train station – these are the two main stations serving the cities.

Florence to Rome

There is plenty to keep you entertained in Florence so don’t miss out on seeing the local Tuscany attractions, such as the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the charming city of Siena and the famous Chianti wine region. If you do choose to enjoy tours from Florence, be sure to book in advance – it is much cheaper than booking last-minute tours through your hotel.

To travel from Florence to Rome, we again recommend a train transfer. Take one of the high-speed trains from Florence Santa Maria Novella train station to Rome Termini train station for the best experience. These Freccia trains offer upgrades, including first class and business class, but standard class is also very comfortable. Keep in mind that these trains can be busy, so we advise booking your train tickets before departure – you can do this at the train station a day or so before you travel or online.

Rome to Sorrento

Rome Termini train station is located in the heart of the Eternal City, so it’s wise to book a centrally located hotel or you will need to take a taxi to your accommodation. A benefit of choosing a hotel within Rome’s Aurelian Walls is that all the famous attractions are on your doorstep, including the Colosseum and Roman Forum, the Pantheon and Vatican City. If you would like to investigate the wider region, you can take the Metro to other Lazio attractions, such as Ostia Antica.

To get from Rome to Sorrento, take the train from Rome Termini train station to Naples Centrale train station and then pre-book a taxi to take you from Naples Centrale train station to your hotel in Sorrento. We strongly discourage you from hopping in one of the taxis outside Naples Centrale – they are often unlicensed and charge high fees. Instead, pre-book your taxi through a reputable company.

From Sorrento, there are plenty of fascinating historic attractions and coastal villages to enjoy, such as Pompeii and the island of Capri, but do take some time to simply unwind on the coast – the sea views from Sorrento are simply idyllic!

At the end of your Italy multi-centre holiday, we recommend flying home from Naples Capodichino airport.
