If you’ve already made the difficult decision of where to go on your Italy holiday, then you may now be trying to choose the perfect hotel for your trip. After all, you don’t want to arrive ready for a dreamy vacation in Italy and find your hotel is nowhere near the main sights or is a disappointment.

Of course, for expert advice and a hotel hand-selected to suit your needs, we recommend speaking to one of our travel experts, who can create a personalised holiday in Italy just for you. However, if you just want some quick tips and tricks on how to select the perfect hotel for an Italy holiday, then read on.

Location, location, location

Before you start looking for hotels, we highly recommend sitting down and thinking about where you would like to stay during your Italy holiday. You don’t need to know a city or resort really well to do this – simply think about the sights you want to be close to, such as the Colosseum in Rome or the Grand Canal in Venice. Here are some more things to consider:

  • For city breaks: While you can save money by selecting a hotel outside of the city centre, this is somewhat of a false economy as you will have to pay for a taxi, bus or metro to visit the main sights while on holiday. With this in mind, we recommend spending that little bit extra, if you can, to make sure you are centrally located.
  • For larger cities: Even if you are centrally located in one of Italy’s larger cities, you may not be near the attractions that you are most interested in. So, before picking your hotel, why not think about the sights you want to see and then check where they are in the city? This will help you to select an area in which to look for hotels and so can help filter your search.
  • For Lake Garda: If you want a sublime view of the lake but also want to be near shops and restaurants, then you can’t beat Sirmione or central Desenzano del Garda – just keep in mind that these are some of the busiest places around the lake and so you may prefer Bardolino or Garda if you want somewhere a little more tranquil but still with beautiful lake views.
  • For Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast: For a relaxing vacation, we recommend choosing a hotel with sea views and spending a little more for a room upgrade so that you can enjoy the scenery. Just keep in mind that some sea-view hotels are set in a more remote position, so you may not be as close to restaurants and bars.

Do you want a luxury resort or a base?

After settling on a location, we suggest that you consider what you want from your hotel. Do you want a luxurious resort, with a gym or swimming pool for example, or are you eager to explore the sights and just want somewhere to lay your head?

  • For luxury: Keep in mind that you will need to pay a little more if you want a luxurious experience. We recommend looking at 4+ stars in coastal resorts and the lakes, and perhaps look only at 5 star hotels in the main cities.
  • For a budget-friendly base: If you just want somewhere clean and welcoming to rest at night, then consider a centrally located 3 star hotel. Many of these are family run and provide a very warm and pleasant environment, with helpful staff who can point out the best attractions.
  • For self-catering: If you want the flexibility of cooking some of your own meals, look out for hotels that offer a selection of on-site self-catering villas or apartments – they are a great choice for families and give you a hotel experience with the benefits of a kitchenette.
  • For reliability: If you want a hotel with familiar features then consider a chain, such as Best Western or Hilton. While they may not have the charm of a quaint, family-run hotel, they do tend to offer standard services that you can rely on.
