Italian Lakes holidays

Italy has a lot of wonderful natural scenery all over the country. Although many visitors will go here for the famous cities, like Rome, Florence and Venice, the beautiful countryside is well worth exploring.

Some of the most picturesque natural scenery is found around the lakes region. Although there are many lakes all over the country, the most famous area is in the North, near to the border with Switzerland. Here, the main lakes are:

These are the largest of the lakes, but you will also find smaller lakes here, including Lake Orta and Lake Iseo.

There is so much to see in this region for anyone visiting on Italian holidays, including sleepy villages, mountains and stunning blue lakes. At Bellarome we can arrange your trip as part of a multi-centre holiday that could also take in a city or a different region.

But where should you go if you visit the lakes?

Top destinations around the lakes

There are many beautiful places to visit in this region of Italy, from large towns to tiny villages. Here are some of the best places that you may want to visit:

  • Stresa on Lake Maggiore, a popular resort that Ernest Hemingway used to enjoy on his holidays in Italy.

  • Bellagio, one of the most famously beautiful towns in the whole of Italy. It is the quintessential destination in the region, located right on Lake Como.

  • Varenna, another destination on Lake Como, which is a small fishing village filled with tiny lanes and old buildings.

  • Gandria on Lake Lugano, a peaceful hamlet filled with stone cottages that is only accessible by boat or on foot.

  • Orta San Giulio on Lake Orta, which is one of the most beautiful hideaways you will find, consisting of a medieval village with cobbled streets, and looking out onto the nearby Isola San Giulio.

As well as these destinations, you may want to go hiking in the region. There are a number of excellent mountains to choose from, one of which is Monte Generoso. This is the highest mountain in the area at 1,700 metres, and you will find it located between Lake Como and Lake Lugano. There are some good hiking trails and amazing views from the top.

Or take the cable car to the top of Monte Baldo where you can go for a long walk or take your bike to explore the many trails.

See the Italian lakes on your holiday

Of all the regions of Italy, the area surrounding the lakes in the North is one of the most beautiful. If you would like to visit any of these lakes, we can arrange your tour for you.

Many people choose to stay by one of the lakes for a week or so before spending the second half of their holiday in another destination, like one of the cities or somewhere in the South.

Whatever you decide to do, have a think about whether the lakes could be a good destination for part of your holiday, and then book your trip to this beautiful region.
