Romantic places to propose in Italy

If you’re planning to propose and want to make sure it is particularly special and memorable then why not propose during a vacation or city break in one of the most romantic countries in the world? Italy is well known as the country of love and is home to beautifully romantic cities, such as Rome, Venice and Verona. However, these are also touristic cities, meaning that many of the most famous locations are bustling with tourists. So how can you make your special moment more private and memorable? Read on for our pick of the most romantic places to propose in Italy.

Venice is surely one of the most magical and romantic cities in the world and we couldn’t imagine a better place to propose. Instead of popping the question in front of a crowd of tourists, we recommend booking a private gondola tour and, assuming you're steady on your feet (or bended knee), you can propose during a romantic ride down the Grand Canal. You could also include a serenade on your gondola ride or arrange for your gondola tour to be at sunset, for a beautiful crimson backdrop to your special moment.

Rome is surely one of the best cities in Italy in which to propose thanks to its stunning attractions, such as the Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum and the Spanish Steps. However, if you’re looking for a more private location in which to propose then we highly recommend Gianicolo Hill (Janiculum), which is outside the ancient city and gives the most stunning views of the city. It is still close to the historic centre but the peaceful setting and stunning, panoramic views will be sure to make your proposal memorable for the best of reasons. As a side note, keep in mind that a single shot is fired from a cannon at noon.

Well before it featured as the setting of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Verona had established itself as the city of love. And it’s no wonder as it boasts some of the prettiest scenery and most impressive monuments, such as Castelvecchio near the river and Casa di Giulietta (Juliet’s House), featuring her famous balcony. However, while Juliet’s balcony may seem like the perfect place to propose, that area is often overwhelmingly busy with tourists, which could interfere with your special moment. Instead, we recommend proposing near or even inside Arena di Verona, which is the city’s famous amphitheatre in Piazza Bra. The arena is host to operas and musical theatre, and you may choose to propose after enjoying a show, or you may like to propose outside in Piazza Bra, which is spacious and so doesn’t feel closed or busy, allowing you to enjoy a romantic moment with your partner.

Another romantic city to consider is Florence, which is famous for its artistic and architectural heritage, and a good choice if you are planning to propose as part of a city break. While there are a great many beautiful locations in this city that would be perfect for a wedding proposal, we would like to recommend Piazza Santa Croce, where you could propose in front of the stunning Basilica, which is decorated with delicate frescoes. It is one of the main squares in Florence but it has an open feel that makes it feel less busy, ensuring that you can enjoy your special moment with your partner. Alternatively, you could propose during a wine-tasting tour in the Tuscan countryside.

If you have your sights set on a beach proposal then you surely can’t beat the white sandy beaches and crystal clear waters of Sardinia. There are a number of resorts in Sardinia to choose from but some of the best beaches can be found on the east coast. Of them, we highly recommend Cala Mariolu, which is surely the most spectacular beach in Sardinia. The pristine sand is lapped by crystal blue waters and framed by coastal rocks, giving a cove-like feeling. It will be sure to impress!

If you’re looking for something a little more off the beaten track then we must recommend the Cinque Terre, which is a stunning strip of the Liguria coastline made up of five fishing villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. Along the coastline, Mediterranean herbs and trees grow spontaneously from the top of the hills down to the water level, creating a beautiful and romantic atmosphere. Coastal paths connect some of the villages and the path between Riomaggiore and Manarola is called the Via Dell'Amore (Lovers Walk). Along the walk you will find The Lover’s Lock, which is famous as a place where couples can seal their eternal love and there is a monument here in the shape of a male and female locked in a kiss – it is surely the perfect place to propose in the Cinque Terre!
