Rome and Beach Holidays

With our modern lives becoming busier, many of us want to make more of our holiday time and really make the most of a trip abroad. However, with the desire to see cultural and historic attractions, yet also spend some time relaxing in a sun-soaked location, sometimes a simple beach vacation or city break isn’t quite enough.

That’s why we love twin- and multi-centre holidays, as they give you the opportunity to visit two, three or even four places in one holiday, and with so much to see in Italy, we can’t think of a better country for a touring holiday. If you would love to visit Italy on holiday but want to combine the iconic attractions, such as the Colosseum and Vatican City in Rome, with some time relaxing in a coastal hideaway, then we think you’ll love these Rome and Beach Holidays. Plus, with our customised service, you could even use one of these holidays as a template for your own personalised Italy holiday – for a tailor-made quote featuring the resorts in Italy that you would like to visit, please contact us.

Rome and the Beaches of Monte Argentario

Monte Argentario is a little-known region of Italy that has been largely untouched by tourism, meaning that you can completely relax here on quiet beaches and paddle in the pristine waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. It can be found on the west coast in the famous region of Tuscany in central Italy and boasts unbelievable coastal vistas, idyllic and secluded beach coves, and pretty seaside towns that ooze Italian charm. Its serene atmosphere contrasts perfectly with the vibrancy that you find in Rome, giving you the opportunity to start your vacation to Italy in the Eternal City of Rome, where you can discover famous attractions, such as the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps, and then travel to Monte Argentario for some well-earned relaxation time.

Monte Argentario has several sun-soaked resorts that we love to combine with Rome in a city and beach holiday in Italy. Our favourites are:

  • Albinia – a charming hamlet with a sandy beach and quaint attractions, including a Salt Fortress (Torre delle Saline).
  • Feniglia – a secluded resort, with beaches set against a hilly backdrop that is idyllic.
  • Orbetello – the perfect choice for those that want to immerse themselves in nature as it is home to a protected Nature Reserve.
  • Porto Ercole and Porto Santo Stefano – the two main towns in Monte Argentario, featuring charming ports and historic attractions, as well as pebble beaches, where you can enjoy a seaside stroll.

Rome and Calabria

To see our package, please click here.

Calabria is a uniquely charming region in South Italy, not far from Naples, that borders the Tyrrhenian Sea in the west and the Ionian Sea to the east, giving you the opportunity to recline in front of sea views in a region that has been largely undiscovered by tourists. We love the combination of Rome and Calabria as a honeymoon or special couples’ holiday, and there is a wealth of resorts in the region that you can enjoy. For diversity, one of our favourite combinations is Rome and Tropea, which gives you the opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of a large city in Rome before relaxing in the impressive seaside resort of Tropea, which doesn’t just boast sublime beaches, it also has many cultural attractions for a truly diverse and relaxing holiday. Our favourite attractions in Tropea are:

  • Costa degli Dei (the "Coast of the Gods"), with its steep cliffs that roll down into the emerald green waters of the sea
  • Sun-soaked beaches
  • The Franciscan Monastery
  • A 12th century Norman Cathedral
  • The ruins of Tropea Castle

However, if you are eager to explore the seaside villages in Calabria and enjoy a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere, then you may prefer a small seaside village, such as Capo Rizzuto, and as a part of our customised holiday planning service, we will take the time to understand what you want from your Rome and beach vacation and will then suggest the most appropriate resorts for you.

Rome and Ischia

If you want to enjoy the secluded atmosphere of an island hideaway on your Rome and beach holiday, then we recommend combining a city break in Rome with some time relaxing on the island of Ischia, which is nestled in the Tyrrhenian Sea off the coast of South Italy, not far from Sorrento and Capri.

Ischia is unusually formed from volcanic rock and so boasts stunning natural scenery, including secret sea caves set against a mountain backdrop. As well as the many nearby attractions, the island of Ischia also offers plenty to keep you entertained, including pretty beaches where you can enjoy watersports and beach games, and we particularly recommend the Maronti and Citara beaches for relaxing in the sun. Ischia is also home to several natural thermal spas, as well as ancient ruins and medieval architecture, making it ideal for a rejuvenating couples’ holiday. Plus, it has a wealth of resorts that you can visit on a day trip, such as:

  • Capri – known locally as “the Pearl of the Mediterranean”, where you can visit pretty island gardens, historic villas and go inside the magical Blue Grotto cave
  • Sorrento – known for its lemon groves and relaxed coastal vibe, this is the perfect place to sample authentic pizza and we particularly recommend Pizzeria Da Franco!
  • Pompeii – the lost city of South Italy that was buried beneath a blanket of ash following an ancient eruption. Here you can visit the excavations and visit the sites that were completely preserved by the ash and buried for nearly 1500 years, yielding a unique glimpse back in time.
  • Mount Vesuvius – you can enjoy a guided walk up Mount Vesuvius from Ischia for the opportunity to stand on an active volcano!

Rome and Apulia

Finally, we would like to recommend a Rome and beach vacation that includes one of the resorts in the pretty region of Apulia. This region in Southeast Italy borders the Adriatic Sea in the east, the Ionian Sea to the southeast, and the Strait of Òtranto and Gulf of Taranto in the south, offering plenty of opportunities to enjoy the coastal resorts and admire glorious sea views. If you are eager to explore the seaside villages and enjoy a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere that has yet to be discovered by tourists, then we highly recommend the following coastal villages:

  • Vieste
  • Peschici
  • San Menaio
  • Gallipoli
  • Otranto
  • Rodi Garganico
  • Polignano a Mare

However, the region is perhaps best known for its unusual architecture as Apulia is home to the magical city of Alberobello, where you can find the Trulli District. The trulli are charming, fairytale-like villas, with cone-shaped roofs that create an otherworldly atmosphere, and we highly recommend taking a day to visit Alberobello and take a tour of the Trulli District.
