The 73rd Venice International Film Festival

The 73rd Venice International Film Festival is kicking off August 31st and is, once again, directed by Alberto Barbera. It is running until September 10th and is sure to attract many famous faces, artists, directors and producers.

This year the Festival will be opened by Damien Chazelle’s La La Land, which is a romantic musical starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, in which an aspiring actress (played by Stone) and jazz musician (played by Gosling) fall in love. Other films showing at the festival include sci-fi thriller Arrival, starring Amy Adams, and the black comedy horror The Bad Batch, with Jim Carrey, Keanu Reeves and Suki Waterhouse.

These films are all in competition for the Festival’s coveted Golden Lion, but there are many other excellent films showing at the Festival that didn’t make the short-list, including The Magnificent Seven and the British-made One More Time With Feeling.

The winner of the Golden Lion is decided by a jury, which is being headed up by Sam Mendes this year, with Gemma Arterton on the panel, among other great artists. Previous films that have taken home the prize include The Wrestler, Somewhere and Brokeback Mountain.

If you’re in Venice during the Festival, be sure to enjoy the lively atmosphere and let us know if you spot any famous faces!
