Venice International Film Festival 2015

It’s coming up to that special time of year again in Venice – the 2015 International Film Festival will be taking place between the 2nd and 12th of September! The 72nd festival, which is being organized by La Biennale di Venezia, will take place on Venice Lido, which is a 7-mile-long sandbar in Venice. The festival will once again be directed by Alberto Barbera and, as always, the aim of the festival is to raise awareness and promote the various aspects of international cinema in all its forms. Another important aspect of the festival is to work toward a better understanding of the history of cinema.

This year the much anticipated film Everest, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke, will open the festival. The film is based on true events and documents a 1996 mountaineering incident involving two expedition groups that encountered substantial storms on their way to the summit of Mount Everest.

Other world premieres being presented at the festival include Equals, directed by Drake Doremus and starring Nicholas Hoult, Kristen Stewart, Guy Pearce and Jacki Weaver; and Beasts of No Nation, directed by Cary Fukunaga and starring Idris Elba.

The highlight of the festival is the awarding of the Golden Lion to the best film. For this prize, films are judged by an international panel of jurors, which is headed this year by the director Alfonso Cuarón. Prizes are also given for best director, best actor/actress and best screenplay.
