Why celebrities love Italy

If you’re a keen star-spotter and have been keeping up-to-date with the whereabouts of your favourite famous face then you may have noticed that a disproportionate number of Hollywood’s elite have chosen to spend their summer holiday in Italy. From Selena Gomez to Cameron Diaz, Italy has been flooded with some of Tinsel Town’s finest.

So just why do celebrities love Italy so much? Here is Bellarome’s take on things…

Loved by: Cameron Diaz

Capri is an island off the southern coast of Italy and is known locally as the Pearl of the Mediterranean thanks to its crystal blue waters and stunning coastal scenery. The town has many quaint shops and there are numerous pretty walks along the coast.

Top attraction
The Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), which is a cave naturally hollowed out by the lapping waters of the sea, is well worth a visit and there are many boat tours from Marina Grande (the main port) to the cave. It has become a popular natural attraction thanks to the beautiful lighting of the cave due to sunlight passing through an underwater cavity and shining through the seawater to create a blue reflection that illuminates the cavern.

Ischia is another island in the Tyrrhenian Sea and is formed from volcanic rocks. The contrast between the glossy coast and the imposing inland mountainous terrain affords holidaymakers stunning natural views. It also a good base from where you can discover other regions of Italy, including Capri and Sorrento.

Top attraction
Ischia hosts an annual film and music festival during the summer, called Global Fest, which pulls in many famous faces. It is hosted by the Ischia International Arts Academy and involves master classes for actors and actresses, exhibitions, special film screenings and social forums. The town comes alive during the festival, which typically takes place during July, making this the best time to visit Ischia.

Lake Como

Loved by: George Clooney

The Italian Lakes, which include Lake Garda, Lake Maggiore and Lake Como, stretch across the North of Italy, are a popular attraction as they offer holidaymakers good weather and pleasant scenery, as well as plentiful bars and restaurants. The climate is mild in both summer and winter, which has resulted in beautiful Mediterranean gardens growing rare and exotic plants. So what makes Lake Como stand out? Of the three largest lakes, it is by far the most peaceful and is set against a backdrop of wooded scenery, making it particularly picturesque.

Top attraction
Well, the lake! You can enjoy wind-surfing, quad bike tours, boat tours of the lake and star-spotting since Mr Clooney is often seen taking a stroll when he visits his lakeside home in Como. Other popular destinations include Colico, Como, Lecco, Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna, and tourists can also easily reach pretty cities, such as Venice, Verona and even Rome.

Loved by: Kim Kardashian and Kanye West

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West selected Fort Belvedere, a 16th-century castle on the southern hills of the Arno River in Florence, as the destination for their wedding earlier this year. So why did the glamourous couple fall in love with Florence? It’s simple: Florence is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in all of Italy!

Top attraction
It is almost impossible to choose a top attraction in a city like Florence as there is so much to see, such as the Duomo, the Boboli Gardens, Palazzo Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery and Ponte Vecchio over the River Arno. However, if we were forced to choose, it would have to be Michelangelo’s Statue of David at the Accademia Gallery, which is breathtaking!

Loved by: Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel

This power couple selected Borgo Egnazia in Puglia for their wedding for a good reason: it is one of the most luxurious resorts on the Italian coast, affording their guests stunning views out to the Adriatic Sea and unrivalled hospitality. There are several very pretty destinations in Puglia to be enjoyed, such as Lecce, Bari and Alberobello.

Top attraction
It has to be the famous Trulli in Alberobello, which are fairytale-like 14th-century dwellings built from local limestone, with dry-stone walls and characteristic conical roofs without mortar. Walking round the town of Alberobello feels like you are stepping back in time and you can even stay in a Trulli for a unique experience of the region!

Well, if it's good enough for Hollywood stars, it's good enough for you so why not check out one of Bellarome's custom-made packages or multi-centre trips to idyllic Italy!
