Winter Vacations in Italy

Winter is a lovely time to visit Italy if you are looking for a tranquil vacation or would like to experience the magic of Italy on a budget. During winter, the popular cities tend to be less busy, meaning you can enjoy the main sights in a relaxing atmosphere, whilst enjoying the pretty Christmas decorations and festive lights. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that, in the south, some hotels do close during the low season and so the best winter holidays in Italy focus on mid and north Italy.

In particular, we thoroughly recommend visiting Venice during winter – the Grand Canal certainly loses none of its magnificence in the colder months and the city also comes to life in February, when there is the Carnival. Winter is also the perfect time to enjoy a day tour from Venice to the Dolomites, which are famed for their soaring peaks, emerald green lakes and refreshing pine forests.

Another excellent choice for a winter vacation is the Italian Lakes. The biggest three lakes are Lake Garda, Lake Como and Lake Maggiore, and each provides a unique atmosphere that can be enjoyed year round. There are plenty of activities that can be enjoyed in the winter, such as quad biking and wine-tasting tours.

Rome does not escape mention either! In December, the weather tends to be mild and the main sights, such as the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain, are much quieter, while the food is still decadently fresh and wholesome. Rome can become quite humid in the summer, so visiting in the winter months can be very pleasant for those that don’t enjoy the heat. If you’re a rugby fan, February and March are a good time to visit the city as the RBS 6 Nations gets underway.

There are also, of course, multiple ski resorts in Italy that are very popular during the winter months. In particular, we recommend the Aosta Valley and Madonna di Campiglio. While Aosta and Courmayeur are excellent choices for shorter breaks due to their reliable transport links, Madonna di Campiglio is a good choice for young couples or groups as it is known for its vibrant atmosphere and has a wide range of bars and cafes that cater to tourists. Both offer runs for varying abilities and also ski lifts, and you can pre-book skiing lesson if you are a beginner or looking to improve.
