Aosta

Aosta (French: Aoste) is the principal city of the bilingual Aosta Valley in the Italian Alps, 110 km north west of Turin. It is situated near the Italian entrance of the Mont Blanc Tunnel, at the confluence of the Dora Baltea and the Buthier. Aosta also lies very close to the Italy/France/Switzerland borders and is an Italian city with a strong French influence. The ancient town walls of the city, known as Augusta Praetoria Salassorum, are still preserved almost in their entirety, built of concrete faced with small blocks of stone. Within the city walls stand many towers that characterise Aosta, including Tour de Lepreux, Tour du Pailleron and Tour du Baillage. The town is also home to a Roman theatre, of which the southern facade remains today. The structure dates back to the late reign of Augustus and allowed for up to up to 4,000 spectators.Other sights in Aosta include the Cathedral, the Romanesque-Gothic Church of Sant'Orso and Saint-Benin College (now an exhibition site).
