Bari

Bari sits on the Adriatic coast and is the second most important economic centre of mainland southern Italy after Naples. It is best known as a port and university city, as well as the city of Saint Nicholas.

Bari's old town has retained its ancient Medieval plan and contains many historic buildings and sites. The old town was once the heart of pre-Roman and Roman Bari and it is now a fashionable meeting place, with bars and restaurants open until the early hours. Bari's main attractions include Basilica of Saint Nicholas, Bari Cathedral, Petruzzelli Theatre, Castello Svevo (Swabian Castle), Pinacoteca Provinciale di Bari, The Russian Church, Barivecchia (Old Bari), Teatro Petruzzelli, Teatro Margherita, Teatro Piccinni, San Giorgio degli Armeni, Santa Teresa dei Maschi and more. It also has a beautiful Orto Botanico di Bari (botanical gardens), which are well worth visiting during the spring and summer months.
