About Pompeii & Herculaneum

The city of Pompeii is close to the Bay of Naples. In 79 AD, a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius covered and destroyed Pompeii, killing over 2000 inhabitants. The city was lost for 1,500 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1599. The Volcanic ash and pumice had preserved the city from the time of the eruption all those years earlier. This site is considered to be one of the few sites where an ancient city has been preserved in detail - everything from jars and tables to paintings and people were frozen in time, yielding an unprecedented opportunity to see how the people lived 2000 years ago.

With the morning part of this tour you will discover this site and some of the aspects of everyday life in this ancient city. You'll be astonished by the number of villas, shops and public buildings that archaeologists brought back to life. Also, you will stop in a local factory where craftsmen will demonstrate the production process of cameos and corals.

After, Pompeii it will be time for your paid for lunch (drinks not included) before heading to Herculaneum (Italian: Ercolano). Ercolano is a resort and the starting point for excursions to the excavations of Herculaneum and for the ascent of Vesuvius by bus. The town also manufactures leather goods, buttons, glass, and the wine known as Lacryma Christi (Tear of Christ). Erocolano was submerged in lava in mud during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius back in 79 AD. Our tour guide will lead you around Herculaneum before returning back to Naples.
