About Sorrento & Vesuvius

Sorrento features beautiful architecture, many cafes and restaurants, and shops catering to tourists. It is the last stop on the Circumvesuviana rail system and therefore it is easily reached from Naples and an ideal base for visiting Pompeii and Capri. Sorrento has been a popular destination for many years now and offers beautiful views and a tranquil atmosphere, making it ideal for couples looking for a romantic holiday or families wanting a break in the sunshine.

Mount Vesuvius is a volcano in the Gulf of Naples, Italy, about 9 kilometres east of Naples and a short distance from the shore. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years. The Mountain is famed for an eruption in 79 AD that led to the burying and destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, which can be visited on a fascinating day trip from Sorrento. The volcano is closely monitored by the Osservatorio Vesuvio using seismic and gravimetric stations so that they can have warning of any pending eruption. No magma has been detected within 10 km of the surface, indicating that the volcano is currently "inactive" and it is classfied as "Basic" or "Green" level.
