Destinations to Explore on Lazio Holidays

As well as the famous landmarks and history of Rome, those enjoying a holiday to Lazio can discover the city of Tivoli, which sits 34 kilometres east of Rome. Here, holidaymakers can find the famous ruins of Hadrian's Villa (Villa Adriana) and the delightful gardens and fountains of the Villa d'Este, and as a part of a customised Rome holiday booked with us, we can arrange a special guided tour of these villas - a cultural treat for anyone with an interest in historic architecture. South of Rome is the Colli Albabi, site of a quiescent volcanic complex of hills and lakes, where rich Romans build Renaissance and Barroco villas to escape the heat of Rome, including the Pope. Nearby is Frascati, a popular Rome day trip destination, where you can explore several attractive historic hill towns known collectively known as the Castelli Romani. West of Rome is the Roman city in ruins of Ostia Antica and we highly recommend enjoying a day trip to Ostia on your Lazio holiday, especially if you have an interest in the Roman Empire and archaeology. Ostia also has a delightful beach with the opportunity to enjoy watersports, making it an excellent day trip from Rome on a summer holiday to Lazio. Moving south from Ostia you will find Formia, which sits on the southern coastal edge of Lazio. This charming resort once sat along the Appian way in Roman times and hosts Cicero's tomb, but it is also known for its modern beaches, making it a popular destination for a Lazio holiday during the summer months when you can enjoy watersports and sunbathing.
