Rome day tour with wine tasting: Assisi - Orvieto - Santa Maria degli Angeli

Rome is a beautifully historic city but, if you crave to discover the "real" Italy, where you can discover small, ancient towns, then our tour to Assisi and Orvieto won't disappoint!

It takes you to the beautiful countryside around Rome, with stops in the spiritual town of Assisi and the gloriously charming town of Orvieto, as well as a stop in the Tuscan Hills for a wine tasting experience. It is a great choice for those seeking to discover the heart of Italian culture, as well as those interested in the Christian faith or religious architecture.

Tour itinerary

Leaving Rome in a northerly direction, you will take a bus tour through the Tiber Valley to the small town of Orvieto. Here, you can admire the magnificent 14th-century cathedral, which is widely regarded to be a masterpiece of Gothic architecture.

The tour continues through the lush Tuscan Hills, where you can admire the landscape decorated with olive groves and vineyards. We're sure you do not need us to tell you that this region of Italy produces some of the land's most famous and equisite wines, including those from the Orvieto, Chianti and Brunello di Montalcino regions, and you'll no doubt be pleased to read that a stop is included here so that you can taste some of the local produce and, of course, some of that famous wine!

In the early afternoon, having driven along the shores of Lake Trasimeno, you will reach Assisi, which is settled at the foot of Mount Subasio and is the birthplace of St Francis. Here, you'll enjoy a guided tour through the tangled lanes of this historic town and see:

  • the Church of St Claire
  • St Francis' birthplace and his childhood home
  • Town hall Square and the Town hall
  • a Roman Temple
  • St Francis' Basilica
  • the ancient city walls, with their magnificent frescoes

Leaving Assisi, there will be a stop at the town of Santa Maria degli Angeli, which is named after the church where St Francis died in 1226, and so is a particularly special place for those interested in the Christian faith.

After you have explored all that Assisi has to offer, you will be returned to your hotel in Rome, where you can reflect on your day discovering the heart of Italy.
