La Spezia

La Spezia lies at the head of the Gulf of La Spezia. The city is located between Genoa and Pisa on the Ligurian Sea. It is one of the main Italian military and commercial harbours and hosts one of Italy's biggest military industries, OTO Melara. Its strong military history (much seen at the Museo Tecnico Navale) and mild climate makes La Spezia a popular tourist destination. La Spezia is well-connected by transport and makes a good, affordable base for exploring other nearby locations; Cinque Terre, the Italian Riviera, Porto Venere, San Terenzio and Portofino. The town spreads across the inside of the Golfo dei Poeti, the Gulf of Poets and has lovely views inland, towards the Apuan Alps. La Spezia has the following churches; Cristo Re dei Secoli ("Christ the King of Centuries", Cathedral), Abbey Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Church of Santi Giovanni e Agostino. Others attractions include many museums (including the Ubaldo Formentini Civic Museum and Palazzina delle Arti) and the Castle of San Giorgio (built by Niccolo Fieschi in 1262).
